Retrovir (zidovudine) is an anti-HIV medication. It is in a category of HIV medications called nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). Zidovudine prevents HIV from altering the genetic material of healthy T-cells. This prevents the cells from producing new virus and decreases the amount of virus in the body.

Uses

Zidovudine is used for the treatment of HIV and the prevention of HIV transmission from an infected mother to her fetus.
Zidovudine is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor antiviral agent used to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. It works by slowing the growth of the virus. It is not a cure for HIV and does not prevent the passing of HIV to others. This medication is also used in pregnant women to prevent spreading the virus to the fetus. One group of HIV medications (the nucleoside/nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors-NRTIs such as zidovudine and lamivudine) are very useful. However, NRTIs are recommended to be used in combination with other groups of HIV medications in order to be effective. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more details.
This medication may also be used to prevent HIV after coming in contact with the virus.

How to take

Studies indicate that possible blood cell damage may be prevented or treated by taking vitamin E, epoeitin alpha (EPO) or G-CSF with this drug. Zidovudine is best taken on an empty stomach. If you have stomach irritation, zidovudine may be taken with food. The capsules can be broken open and mixed with food right before eating if you have trouble swallowing. Nutritionists recommend taking manganese and B vitamins with this drug.
If this medicine is prescribed every 4 hours, it is important to take it around the clock, even though it might disrupt your sleep.
Zidovudine must be used in combination with at least two other anti-HIV drugs.

Side effects

Long-term zidovudine use is associated with loss of muscle. Other side effects can be anemia, white blood cell depression, lip, mouth and tongue sores, bone marrow damage, headaches, skin rash, itching, weakness, nervousness, dizziness, nausea, stomach pain, confusion, loss of speech or appetite, muscle aches, fever or sweating, sore throat or abnormal bruising or bleeding. In African-Americans, zidovudine can cause changes in nail color.

Precaution

Before you take zidovudine, tell your doctor if you have a history of anemia, bleeding or blood problems, liver or kidney disease, heart disease, major injury/surgery/infection, alcoholism, any allergies. This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. Avoid breast-feeding to prevent transmission of HIV to a child that may not be infected. Zidovudine is excreted into human milk.

Drug interactions

· Zidovudine should not be combined with Zerit (d4T). They are "antagonistic," which means that they do not work well together and can cause additional side effects.

· Some laboratory studies have suggested that zidovudine should not be combined with either Rebetol or Copegus, two brand-name versions of ribavirin. Ribavirin is an oral medication used to treat hepatitis C. In these studies, ribavirin appeared to affect the way zidovudine is broken down by the body into its active form. This can make zidovudine less effective against HIV. However, many doctors report that this has not been in a problem in their patients taking both drugs.

·1 Zidovudine can interact with some medications used to treat TB, MAC and other bacterial infections. Rifadin (rifampin) and Mycobutin (rifabutin) can lower levels of zidovudine in the bloodstream, which can cause the drug to be less effective against HIV. If you need to take Rifadin or Mycobutin, it might be necessary to switch your zidovudine for another nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) that does not interact with these drugs.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose, take as soon as remembered; do not take if it is almost time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.

Storage

Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (between 15 and 30 degrees C) away from moisture and sunlight. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep away from children and pets.
